This song started as I was driving down the road from Southern Dharma Retreat Center.  I had the first few lines and tune by the time I hit the bridge and took a right on 209, leaving Spring Creek, NC and headed to Little Pine, NC to Dana and Jenna Nagle’s yellow house. That spring, the honeysuckle was so incredible, and when it went out of bloom, I lost the ability to work on the song.  The following spring brought the second verse.  It came on the Blue Ridge Parkway nearing Town Mountain Road.  The third verse needed the honeysuckle to bloom for inspiration and so it didn’t come until the following spring.  Three years, three parts of the song.  Done.  I loved having my friends from Toubab Krewe play on this song – they so understood the feel of it.  When I heard it for the first time on WNCW, my first thought was, “Yea- Toubab Krewe,” then I started singing and I realized it what it was.

Lyrics

It’s hard not to fall in love with the honeysuckle in bloom.
Walking slow my eyes roll back at the scent of that fume.
The days are long, the sun hangs in the sky up above.
It is the season of growing and learning to love.

It’s not that love doesn’t yank me and throw me up high.
Or sprinkle light through my fingers and glitter up my eyes.
What has snuck up on me is not a tingling head or a singing heart.
But that patience, patience, makes of us a piece of art.

I am with you and we can watch clouds pass
But if we don’t go deeper then it ain’t gonna last.
I can sing about patience, I can sing about love,
But let’s lay it on the table, that’s what trust is made of,
It’s what love is made of, let’s see what we are made of.

It’s hard not to fall in love with the honeysuckle in bloom.
Walking slow my eyes roll back at the scent of that fume.
The days are long, the sun hangs in the sky up above.
It is the season of growing and learning to love.
