From the recording Frisky or Fair
Eliza Lynn: vocals and banjo Rayna Gellert: fiddle John Herrmann: bass
This was the first song I finished writing. Because I am a slow cooker as a writer, I started songs that were finished years later, but this was my first complete song. Driving east on 40 from Nashville to Asheville in the early evening. Old-time virtuosos and friends Rayna Gellert and John Herrmann helpfully recorded this song in two different keys – the first one was too high and just not relaxed enough for this song.
Lyrics
In my life I walk through tunnels
With my fists clenched and tight
When my heart remembers laughter,
That’s the peaking light
La la la la
Things get dark and troubled,
And ways get lost and tough
But if I’m the one who helps me stand,
Smooth outweighs the rough
And it’s true that I don’t know where I’m going
And it’s true that I’m walking on my own
Here I stand, with my boundaries soft as foothills,
On the path on the palm of my own hand
The way we move makes waves in our possibilities.
We ride an unknown tide
So listen to yourself sing,
As you drive down the road
You’ll breathe in a sweet patience
And exhale your lonesome load
La la la la
In my life I walk through tunnels
With my fists clenched and tight
When my heart remembers laughter,
That’s the peaking light
